Why Seasonal Family Photoshoots in Norfolk and Suffolk Countryside Are So Popular
If you’ve ever looked at a family photo and been instantly transported back to that exact season—the crisp crunch of autumn leaves underfoot or the smell of lavender on a warm breeze—then you already understand why seasonal photoshoots have such lasting power.
As a local family photographer working across Norfolk and Suffolk for years, I can honestly say: nothing compares to the natural beauty of this region through the seasons. From coastal walks in spring to woodlands glowing amber in autumn, it’s no wonder that so many families make seasonal portraits a yearly tradition.
Let’s explore why this beautiful corner of England is perfect for your next family photoshoot—and why spring and autumn are the secret sweet spots.
The Magic of the Seasons in Family Portraits
Why Time of Year Matters More Than You Think
Every season brings its own atmosphere. Spring bursts with life—new flowers, pastel skies, and soft greens—while autumn offers rich tones, golden light, and a sense of reflection. These seasonal cues add emotion, character, and depth to your images in a way that a studio backdrop just can’t replicate.
I once photographed a family with three kids and a border collie in a bluebell wood near Thetford in late April. The sun filtered through the trees, and the youngest sat barefoot in the flowers while her big brother tried to balance a stick on the dog’s head. The photos were full of laughter and colour, and when they received the final album, the mum emailed me saying, “You somehow captured the season and their personalities at the same time.”
That’s the goal—photos that feel like that season of your life.
Why Spring and Autumn Are Ideal for Family Photoshoots
Spring: Soft Colours, New Beginnings
In Norfolk and Suffolk, spring arrives with a flourish. Think fresh blooms in the gardens of National Trust properties, bluebells carpeting the forests, and lambs grazing in the background of gently rolling fields.
The light is softer too. Spring sunshine doesn’t cast the harsh shadows of summer, which means more flattering portraits and a dreamy, romantic glow to your images. Add to that the fact that families are often feeling refreshed after winter, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for relaxed, joy-filled photos.
Wardrobe-wise, spring is a dream. Floaty dresses, chinos, light jumpers, and florals—all photograph beautifully against the countryside backdrops.
Autumn: Warm Light and Deeper Tones
Autumn is hands-down my busiest season for a reason. The Norfolk and Suffolk landscapes light up with colour—golden leaves in the woods, deep purple heather in the Brecks, and the soft blush of misty mornings by the river.
There’s a calm to autumn shoots. Kids aren’t overheated and sticky like in summer. You can layer up in rich earthy tones—scarves, boots, chunky knits—and cuddle into each other for those lovely, natural shots.
One of my favourite sessions was in October at Dunwich Heath. A three-generation family wrapped up warm and wandered the heather paths. The youngest granddaughter picked blackberries with her nan while the rest of the family laughed at the dad’s attempt to climb a tree (he didn’t get very far, but the kids thought he was a superhero). We captured not just portraits, but moments—and that’s the real magic.
Stunning Countryside Locations That Families Love
1. Coastal Charm: Norfolk and Suffolk Beaches
We’re blessed with some of the most photogenic beaches in the UK. Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Southwold, and Walberswick all offer wide-open skies, big sandy spaces, and that refreshing salty air that makes everyone smile more.
I recommend beach shoots during golden hour—just before sunset or just after sunrise—when the light turns everything a gentle gold. Kids can run barefoot, splash at the edge of the waves, or build sandcastles while I capture the fun naturally.
2. Woodland Magic in Thetford, Foxley, and Beyond
The woods in this region are simply stunning. Thetford Forest in spring glows with bluebells, while Foxley Wood in autumn is a fairytale of copper and rust. Forests offer natural “frames” for portraits—tree trunks, overhanging branches, little winding paths.
They’re also ideal for camera-shy kids (and adults!) who feel more relaxed playing among the trees than posing for the camera. We make it into an adventure walk—with photos.
3. Lavender and Wildflower Fields
If you’ve never had portraits taken in a lavender field, you’re in for a treat. Norfolk Lavender in Heacham is especially popular from June to early August. The purple hues, bees buzzing, and sweet scent all create a relaxed, beautiful setting.
And Suffolk has plenty of tucked-away wildflower meadows perfect for those whimsical, barefoot portraits. Just ask—I have a list of secret spots I share with clients!
Why So Many Families Come Back Each Year
It Becomes a Tradition
Many of my clients started with a maternity shoot or a “first steps” session. Now, years later, we’re capturing their teens laughing, playing, even bringing the grandparents along. Booking seasonal shoots gives families a consistent way to document life’s changes in a meaningful, visual way.
One couple told me they use their annual photoshoot as an excuse to spend a whole afternoon outdoors with the kids—no screens, no distractions—just togetherness. And the photos are their reward.
Easy Access, Family-Friendly Settings
Norfolk and Suffolk are full of accessible, family-friendly locations. Most of the places I recommend have parking, toilets, and café options nearby—because we all know a hot chocolate bribe goes a long way with little ones!
Whether you’ve got toddlers, teens, or grandparents in tow, I can help find the right setting for everyone to feel comfortable.
What to Expect From a Seasonal Family Shoot
How the Session Works
Most of my seasonal shoots last about an hour—long enough to capture lots of variety, but short enough to keep everyone engaged. I’ll guide you gently through different spots, give you fun little prompts rather than stiff poses, and always make space for candid moments.
What to Wear for Each Season
Spring: Think soft pastels, floral prints, light knits, and comfy shoes for walking in fields or woods.
Autumn: Go for warm tones like rust, olive, mustard, navy, and burgundy. Layers and textures look great in autumn light—scarves, boots, chunky knits.
Don’t worry—I send all my families a full prep guide ahead of time to help with clothing choices, logistics, and how to keep the kids happy on the day.
You’re Not Just Booking a Shoot—You’re Creating Memories
At the end of the day, a seasonal family photoshoot is so much more than pictures. It’s an hour spent together in nature, away from screens and to-do lists, soaking in the season and the people you love most.
And every time you pass those prints on your wall, or turn the pages of a photo album, you’re right back there—spring breeze in your hair or autumn sun on your back.
