Relaxed, fun and beautifully natural wedding photography in Plymouth, Devon

Professional wedding photography without the usual travel premium.

If you’re getting married in Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge, Saltash, Tavistock, the South Hams or surrounding areas, I’d love to photograph your wedding.

I’m Thetford-based, but over the next three years I’m going to be spending considerably more time in Plymouth — and rather than simply travelling down and back, I’ve decided to make the most of it.

And there’s a rather good reason why…

My son is heading to university in Plymouth.

So, over the next three years, I’ll be making regular trips down to the area to see him.

That means I get to combine two things I enjoy:

Seeing my son and photographing weddings.

And it means couples in Plymouth have the opportunity to book an experienced, full-time professional wedding photographer without paying a hefty destination or long-distance travel surcharge.

Your wedding photography will cost the same as my regular pricing.

That’s pretty simple.

A NEW Plymouth wedding photographer with 200+ weddings behind him

A little about us

I’ve photographed more than 200 weddings, from tiny intimate ceremonies and elopements to full-day weddings with hundreds of guests.

I’ve photographed weddings in stately homes, hotels, barns, country venues, pubs, gardens, registry offices and some wonderfully unusual places.

And after all those weddings, I’ve learnt something important:

Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot.

It’s your wedding.

You shouldn’t spend the day being told where to stand, how to smile or what to do next.

You should be enjoying yourselves.

Laughing with your mates.

Crying with your mum.

Drinking champagne.

Hugging people you haven’t seen for years.

Dancing badly.

And generally having an absolutely brilliant time.

That’s where I come in.

Wedding photography that’s relaxed, natural and fun

My approach is a mixture of documentary, candid and creative wedding photography, with enough direction when you need it.

I’ll capture the things you planned…

…and, more importantly, the things you didn’t.

The nervous excitement before the ceremony.

The look on your partner’s face when they see you walking down the aisle.

Your dad trying not to cry.

Your mates behaving exactly as badly as you expected.

The grandparents laughing.

The little moments between the big moments.

And all the stuff that happens when nobody thinks the camera is watching.

I’ll also make sure we get the photographs your parents will want, the group photographs that actually matter and some beautiful photographs of the two of you.

But without turning your wedding day into a military operation.

Plymouth, Devon and the South West

Plymouth is a fantastic place to get married because you’ve got an enormous variety of backdrops within a relatively small area.

You’ve got the coast.

The Hoe.

The Barbican.

The Sound.

Countryside.

Historic houses.

Barns.

Hotels.

Gardens.

And the beautiful countryside and coastal locations around the South Hams.

There are some fantastic wedding venues around Plymouth and the surrounding area, including venues such as Boringdon Hall, St Elizabeth’s House, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Custom House and St Anne’s House. Plymouth City Council currently lists a wide range of approved ceremony venues across the city and surrounding areas.

And that’s before you start looking further into Devon.

So whether you’re planning a relaxed city wedding, a country-house celebration, a coastal wedding or something completely different, I’m happy to come along and photograph it.

Why am I offering Plymouth wedding photography?

I’ll be completely honest.

This isn’t because I’ve suddenly decided I need to travel 250 miles every weekend looking for weddings.

It’s because my son is going to university in Plymouth.

Over the next three years I’ll be making regular trips to Plymouth anyway.

So I thought:

Why not offer couples in the area the chance to book me while I’m there?

It works for everyone.

You get an experienced wedding photographer who is already travelling to the area.

I get to photograph some fantastic Devon weddings.

And I get to visit my son.

Most importantly, there is no additional “destination wedding” price.

You’ll pay my normal wedding photography rates.

No inflated travel package.

No “you’re outside my area so that’ll be another £300”.

Just my normal prices.

What about meeting before the wedding?

Absolutely.

One of the things I believe strongly in is meeting couples before their wedding whenever possible.

Your photographer is going to be around you for some of the most important and emotional moments of your day.

You should know who you’re booking.

We can talk about your plans, look at the venue, discuss timings, work out what photographs matter to you and generally make sure we’re all on the same page.

I’ll still be doing venue recces and planning meetings.

The only difference is that, because I’m travelling between Norfolk and Plymouth, the timings may need to be a little more carefully planned.

For example, I may arrange several Plymouth-area meetings around the same trip rather than making a separate journey for every meeting.

But the meetings are still happening.

And if you’re booking me for your wedding, I’ll make sure we have plenty of opportunity to talk through the day beforehand.

Absolutely fantastic photographer, if you are thinking of booking Neil, run dont walk! Every single moment of our special day was captured beautifully, we were put at ease and are truly grateful for such beautiful memories to cherish.

Neil was our wedding photographer and he's been nothing short of amazing! He went through everything clearly before the day which took a lot of stress away, and kept in contact regularly. Neil completely took on board what we said we would like, and although we've only had our first look photos back so far, they are better than we ever could have hoped for. He's done such a good job of capturing the colourful, fun day we were hoping for and I couldn't have asked for anything more. I would highly recommend Neil!

WHAT MAKES THETFORD PHOTOGRAPHY DIFFERENT?

Relaxed from start to finish

  • No shouting.
  • No bossing guests around.
  • No turning your wedding into a fashion shoot.
  • Just calm guidance whenever you need it.

Perfect if you're camera shy

Most of my couples say they hate having photographs taken.

By the end of the day they’re telling me how much they actually enjoyed it.

Brilliant with children (and dogs!)

Children don’t always smile on demand.

Dogs rarely do.

That’s completely fine.

Patience usually creates better photographs than pressure ever could.

Neil was an amazing photographer his energy and effort towards making us feel comfortable and enjoy ourselves was amazing. The photos turned out amazing better than I could’ve imagined and the fact that he got to give us some photos the next day so we’re not waiting for all of them in one go for a very long while was incredible. His enthusiasm towards his job was really nice to see and I’d definitely recommend him again in a heartbeat!

Small wedding or micro wedding?

Choosing an experienced full-time photographer gives you complete peace of mind.

Every wedding includes professional contracts, insurance, written schedules, planning documentation and secure backups.

Everything is organised so you can simply enjoy your day.

I only take on a limited number of weddings each year

I deliberately keep my diary small.

That means every couple gets my full attention before, during and after the wedding.

You’re never just another booking.

You’re the only wedding I’m thinking about when your day arrives

Neil was absolutely brilliant throughout our wedding day, nothing was too much to ask for and he even bought in specific props for us to capture amazing photos that we liked the look of online. (He even helped me and my best men do our ties properly).

He helped guide everyone to the correct places, making our lives easier, and even after he'd packed away and I asked for one last group photo he brought his gear back out for us.

Thank you Neil for being so great, highly recommended for any event but again, we're thrilled to have had you for such an important day in our lives.

FAQ

Perfect.

Most of my couples do.

I’ll gently guide you when needed, then leave you to enjoy your day.

No problem.

Coverage starts from just 2 hours for smaller weddings and elopements.

Absolutely.

I photograph weddings throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and beyond.

Yes.

Fully insured with professional contracts, planning documents and secure image backups.

Yes, I’ve been using Photoshop since the mid-ninties so have over 25 years of experience.
Minor edits are within the cost, more intricate work will incur an additional cost but this will be discussed before undertaking.

As long as you are no more than a few miles apart I can photograph both parties preparations as this has been done many times. Most of the preparation time is devoted to the bride, but I can discuss individual options with a couple during the planning meetings.

Yes, of course! It’s not for everyone but it is often popular with members of the wedding parties. I often try to get the groups as informal groups while enjoying the day but it’s not a time consuming thing to organise during the normal process of the day.

They could, but whether it’s on your wedding day, or when you see your photos or years down the line, you will regret it!

A professional photographer such as myself has photographed many, many weddings, I have professional equipment that costs £10,000+, I have the experience to ensure your day runs smoothly, the technical knowledge to deal with any situation, back-up equipment in case something breaks. I know how to take great photos and edit them before you even see them! You’ll be confident to get photos that you will love and cherish for the rest of your lives. I am dedicated to providing you with glorious photos and you’ll love what I do.

Do you provide drone photographyI love capturing real moments. To be honest, I get bored photographing the same things, so get all excited looking for new ones. Many of the photos I take, I could never have created myself, even if you gave me an lifetime. The expressions, the laughter, the mood and feeling of the photo – it’s real, this can’t be created.

It depends on how many weddings I have photographed just before yours, but it usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks. Around 3-4 weeks for November to May weddings, approx 6 weeks for June to October weddings.

There is no limit to the number of photos you will receive, but usually it is around 50-80/hr working – each one fully edited to the highest possible standard and consistent with the look you decided on for your photos you can see on my Wedding Styles page.

Absolutely! You receive all your pictures fully edited via a digital download gallery with permission to use them for personal use. Share the gallery link and password with anyone, anywhere in the world and they will be able to view and download the images to share and print themselves.

Yes, in the quieter periods of the day during bridal prep or when guests and yourselves are relaxing and mingling, I will be busy finding those little shots of the details you’ve collated to make your day yours.

If there’s something with specific sentimental value make sure I know about it and I’ll ensure I get it first, while it’s at it’s best.
