Norwich Castle Museum Wedding – May 2025

If you’re thinking about getting married at Norwich Castle Museum, you’re in for something pretty special – especially now that the refurbishments are (finally!) nearing completion. I had the absolute joy of photographing the very first wedding back in the newly reopened registry office this May 2025, and I can honestly say… Norwich did us proud.

Let me walk you through the day, what you can expect from a typical registry office photography package, and why Norwich is one of my favourite places to photograph a wedding.

Norwich Castle’s Fresh Look for 2025 Weddings

Norwich Castle Museum has always been a landmark venue – iconic, historic, and wonderfully central. But with the long-running renovations and scaffolding, it’s been a bit of a waiting game for couples wanting to tie the knot there.

Well, the wait is almost over.

While some hoardings and cranes are still being dismantled, the key parts of the Castle – especially the main entrance and registry office – are now open and looking absolutely stunning. Everything has been refreshed, modernised, and yet it still holds on to that classic charm.

Walking into the newly redecorated space genuinely took my breath away. If you’ve been putting off booking the Castle due to all the works – now is the time to take another look. It’s clean, contemporary, and perfect for photos, both inside and out.

A Joyful Couple and the First Ceremony Back

I had the pleasure of photographing a bubbly local couple who opted for a basic registry office wedding package – three hours of coverage with just enough time to tell the full story of their day, from pre-ceremony nerves to those post-vow smiles.

There was something so memorable about being back in that building again after the refurb. You could feel the excitement in the air – not just from the couple, but from the staff and even the guests. It felt like a fresh start for one of Norwich’s most beloved wedding venues.

What’s Included in a Three-Hour Registry Office Package?

If you’re planning a wedding like this, here’s how a typical 3-hour photography package breaks down:

1. Pre-ceremony coverage (~30 mins)

  • Groom and guests arriving

  • Candid moments – hugs, laughs, nervous pacing

  • Bride’s arrival, a few quick portraits, and those sweet moments just before the ceremony

2. The ceremony itself (~30 mins)

  • Full coverage of the vows, rings, and registry signing

  • Genuine, unobtrusive shots capturing the real emotion of the moment

  • A few posed photos inside if time and light allow

3. Post-ceremony (1 hour +)

  • Group photos outside the Castle

  • Confetti throws (always a winner!)

  • Couples portraits in and around the Castle grounds

  • Or, like in this case, a relaxed walk through the city centre

From Castle to City: Making the Most of Norwich’s Charm

Instead of staying in one spot for their couples photos, this couple had a brilliant idea: walk from the Castle to their reception venue, using Norwich as their backdrop along the way.

The weather? Perfect. Not a single cloud in the sky – though as a redhead, I did have to keep a hat handy. (Wedding photography and sunburn don’t mix well, trust me!)

We started at the museum gardens area, taking relaxed photos as they strolled and laughed, still glowing from the ceremony. Then we made our way through the Royal Arcade, into the Marketplace, and finally to their reception pub for celebratory drinks.

This approach is great for couples who want authentic, documentary-style wedding photos. Nothing too posed – just real smiles, natural movement, and those little moments you’ll treasure.

📸 A Candid Moment Worth Sharing

One of the sweetest moments of the day happened in the marketplace. We were about to take a quick photo with the Castle in the background, and two teenage lads were sitting on a bench where we wanted to shoot. Before we even had to ask, they smiled, stood up, and offered the seat to the bride and groom.

You hear a lot of grumbling about young people these days, but I’ve got to say – moments like that restore your faith. Absolute legends.

Wrapping Up the Shoot at the Reception

After making our way around to the Jarrolds area, we reached the reception venue where the couple were having food and drinks with close friends and family.

We’d slightly run over the three hours – but the energy was just so good, we couldn’t stop! I got a few final portraits, and we did a mock cake cutting so they’d have some shots to remember that part of the day before I left them to enjoy the rest of their afternoon.

It was the perfect ending to a perfect wedding shoot: chilled, fun, and personal.

Why Norwich is a Fantastic Wedding Backdrop

Whether you’re local or coming in from out of town, Norwich is genuinely one of the best cities in the UK for wedding photography. Here’s why:

  • Everything’s walkable: You can go from castle to arcade to pub in under 30 minutes

  • Tons of variety: From grand historic buildings to colourful markets and quirky alleyways

  • Friendly vibe: People are generally warm and respectful (see: our bench heroes!)

  • Seasonal beauty: Whether it’s spring blossoms, summer sunshine, or autumn tones – Norwich delivers

Top Tips if You’re Getting Married at Norwich Castle Museum

1. Book your suppliers early

Now that the venue is up and running again, availability will tighten. Photographers, florists, and even celebrants will get snapped up fast.

2. Be flexible with the weather

If you’re planning outdoor photos, make sure you’ve got a Plan B (umbrellas, shawls, a nearby indoor space). I bring some backups just in case, but having your own makes the day smoother.

3. Wear comfy shoes if you’re planning to walk

Brides: those heels look great in photos but pack flats for the stroll from Castle to reception if you’re doing city shots.

4. Let your day unfold naturally

Some of the best moments I’ve captured weren’t planned. A laugh at the bar, a hug from nan, a couple stealing a quiet moment before walking into the reception. Real memories > rigid shot lists.
