Grime's Graves Flint Festival: Capturing History Through My Lens

As the official photographer for this year’s Grime’s Graves Flint Festival, I am thrilled to invite you to join us on June 15th and 16th for an extraordinary journey back in time. This festival is a unique blend of prehistoric wonder and modern archaeological discovery, all set against the stunning backdrop of Norfolk’s historic landscape. My mission is to capture the essence of this vibrant event, and I can’t wait to see it all unfold through my lens.

A Photographer’s Paradise: Highlights and Events

Saturday in the Talks Tent

The festival kicks off in the Talks Tent with a captivating lineup that promises rich visual storytelling opportunities. At 11:30 AM, the Stone Club introduces the festivities, setting the stage for a day filled with inspiring talks and performances. Highlights include:

  • James Canton at 12:00 PM: His talk on Grounded: A Journey into the Landscapes of Our Ancestors will be a visual feast, perfect for capturing the deep connection between people and the land.
  • Val Thomas at 2:00 PM: Exploring Of Chalk and Flint — Magical Connections in Ancient Norfolk Landscapes, this session promises evocative imagery of mystical landscapes.
  • Phil Harding at 5:00 PM: The Time Team legend will share his flint-filled stories, a must-capture moment of passion and history.

The day concludes with artistic performances, including Verity Birt and Tom Sewell’s Earth Return at 6:30 PM, promising to be a visually stunning highlight.

All-Weekend Attractions

Throughout the weekend, the Ancient House Museum’s Teenage History Club will be showcasing their new experimental film and sound works. These pieces offer a contemporary take on ancient themes, blending past and present in visually compelling ways.

Memma The Cavewoman and her team will be demonstrating ancient crafts like flint knapping and basketry in the Ancient Crafts Village. I’m particularly excited to capture these hands-on activities that bring prehistoric technology to life. The daily quests led by Megalithic Portal to uncover the legendary Puddingstone will add a dynamic element to my visual narrative of the festival.

Hands-On History and Landscape Exploration

For those eager to immerse themselves in history, the festival offers a range of workshops and demos. From flint axes to Neolithic art, these sessions will provide plenty of opportunities to capture engaging and educational moments. The newly expanded landscape trails are another highlight, offering stunning vistas and the chance to photograph visitors as they explore the rich surroundings of Grime’s Graves.

Celebrating Heritage

This festival is not just a look back at the past; it’s a celebration of our present and future connections to history. Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Grime’s Graves now features new audio-visual projections in the mines. I’m looking forward to capturing these modern enhancements that bring ancient stories to life in new and exciting ways.

Special Guests and Performances

The festival features performances by 2Steps 4Words and sound artist Oliver Payne, who will recreate Christian Wolf’s iconic Stones using objects from the site. These performances promise to be visually and audibly captivating, perfect for dynamic and unique photographs.
