Butley Priory and Ramsholt Arms Wedding Photography

If you’ve never heard of Butley Priory, just a stone’s throw from Woodbridge, Suffolk, then let me introduce you to one of the most under-the-radar, jaw-droppingly charming wedding venues I’ve come across. As a professional photographer, I shoot at a wide range of venues—from luxurious halls to casual back-garden ceremonies—but every now and then, you come across a place so rich in character and so genuinely atmospheric that you can’t wait to return. Butley Priory is one of those places.

And the icing on the cake? The couple celebrated with an intimate riverside reception at the Ramsholt Arms, a tucked-away pub on the River Deben that served up food and views to match the magical ceremony.

This wedding was a brilliant example of what’s possible when a couple chooses to go small but go meaningful—and if you run a restaurant or venue, it’s a great case study in what today’s couples really want.

A Brief History of Butley Priory (With a Henry VIII Twist)

Butley Priory is what remains of the former Butley Abbey, which was established in the 12th century. Like so many religious institutions in the UK, it was brought to an abrupt end by Henry VIII during his campaign to dissolve monasteries—and all because he needed a divorce. Typical.

But what’s left behind is stunning. The gatehouse (which now hosts elopements and micro weddings) has been carefully restored, offering gothic stone arches, romantic turrets, and a storybook setting surrounded by peaceful Suffolk countryside. It genuinely feels like a hidden piece of history brought back to life.

Small Capacity, Big Atmosphere

One of the reasons Butley Priory feels so special is its exclusivity. They only host a maximum of two weddings a week—that’s it! No production-line vibe. No wedding treadmill. Just serene, unhurried days that make you feel like you’ve stepped out of time.

When I asked the team, they told me they rarely go over 60 weddings a year. That quietness really shone through in April when I visited—it felt like we had the entire landscape to ourselves.

The Couple’s Vision: Low-Key, High-Impact

The couple booked one of Butley Priory’s elopement packages, designed for smaller weddings. In this case, it was around 12 to 14 guests—just close family and a couple of best mates. They were clear about what they wanted: a meaningful ceremony, gorgeous surroundings, and great food afterwards.

No elaborate entertainment. No 200-guest seating plan headaches. Just sunshine, love, and a photographer who was happy to crawl through bluebells for the perfect shot (yes, that was me).

Weather Surprise: Blue Skies in April

Let’s be honest—April in East Anglia can be a bit hit or miss. We crossed our fingers and hoped for the best, but what we got was a bright, crisp, blue-skied day that felt more like late May. The light was glorious. It bounced off the white stone of Butley, illuminated the interiors perfectly, and meant we could do all group shots and portraits outdoors.

As a photographer, that’s the dream.

A Perfectly Paced Three-Hour Celebration

The couple chose a three-hour package—a tight timeline, but they absolutely maximised it.

Here’s how it unfolded:

  • Ceremony: Held in the beautiful arched main room, with that quiet, serene energy you can only get in places with serious history.

  • Group Photos: Right outside the main door, framed by tall trees and those iconic gothic windows.

  • Romantic Walk: We took 20 minutes to stroll through the grounds, stopping for bluebell shots under the trees and some intimate moments on the winding paths.

  • Interior Portraits: We couldn’t resist a few dramatic stairway photos—Butley’s inside is just as photogenic as its exterior.

Even with a short booking, we created an entire storybook of moments that looked like something from a high-end editorial shoot.

Reception at the Ramsholt Arms: Rustic Charm Meets Coastal Elegance

After the ceremony and portraits, the couple (and I!) headed down to the Ramsholt Arms, about 25 minutes away. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a riverside pub perched right on the quay along the River Deben. Think Norfolk Broads meets Suffolk sea breeze, but with a relaxed pub atmosphere and some seriously good food.

Why It Worked So Well

The Ramsholt Arms provided a seamless transition from ceremony to celebration. No over-the-top décor, no need for hired-in staff or floral installations—just a naturally beautiful backdrop, great service, and food that everyone raved about.

As someone who spends a lot of time at venues and restaurants across the region, I can tell when a team genuinely cares—and the Ramsholt crew knocked it out of the park.

We even snuck out between courses for a quick portrait session along the quay. The golden hour light reflected off the water, boats bobbed in the background, and the couple kicked off their shoes to walk barefoot on the sand. Magical.

Why Smaller Weddings Are Booming in 2025

This year, more couples are prioritising intimacy over extravagance. And honestly, it’s made for some of the best weddings I’ve ever photographed. Here’s why:

  • They want more meaning: Spending their budget on real experiences and personal touches, not chair covers and party favours.

  • They want flexibility: With smaller guest counts, they’re more open to weekday weddings, off-peak months, and unexpected locations.

  • They value service: When you’re only inviting 10 people, every detail matters—food, photography, and flow.

What That Means for Restaurant Owners

If you run a pub or restaurant with a great view, private space, or unique charm, this is your time. Couples are increasingly choosing non-traditional reception venues—and places like the Ramsholt Arms prove that you don’t need chandeliers and five-course banquets to impress.

What you do need?

  • A responsive, flexible team

  • Great food, well presented

  • A photogenic location (or a spot nearby for photos)

  • An ability to deliver a smooth, no-fuss experience

Lessons from the Day: From Behind the Lens

This wedding proved that with the right team and the right setting, you don’t need a six-figure budget to make unforgettable memories.

What Stood Out Most:

  • The flow: From Butley’s historic calm to Ramsholt’s riverside ease, the day felt totally unforced.

  • The value: The couple got the kind of images you’d expect from a much more expensive event.

  • The team effort: Butley Priory’s staff and the Ramsholt Arms team made my job easy. Everyone was relaxed, on time, and in the mood to celebrate.

As a photographer, I always give 110%, whether I’m at a marquee wedding with 200 guests or a quiet elopement like this one. But when the venues match that energy, everything clicks.

Final Thoughts: A Hidden Gem Wedding Combo

So, if you’re a restaurant owner wondering how to attract more intimate wedding receptions or private events, take a cue from the Ramsholt Arms. Partner with great local venues, work with photographers who can show your space in its best light, and lean into the rise of low-key luxury.

And if you’re a couple reading this—yes, this could be you. A stunning venue. A relaxed reception. Photos you’ll treasure. All without breaking the bank.
